Website goals for companies: What do you want to achieve with the website?

08/10/2021

When creating a website, it is easy to fall into the temptation to skip the analysis and get straight to work on content and desired functions. But for the website to be successful, you first have to know what exactly you want to achieve with it.

A website can serve a wide variety of goals, from product presentation to customer acquisition to increasing brand awareness. To set the website up for success, you need to define your goals and develop the appropriate strategy from there.

A success-oriented goal is SMART:

  • Specific: What exactly do you want to achieve? The more specific the goal, the better the website can be optimised for it.
  • Measurable: How will you measure the achievement of the goal? The goal must include concrete numbers in order to be tracked.
  • Achievable: Can you really reach the target? While the goals should always be challenging, they should also be in line with what your company can achieve. Unachievable goals lead to failure.
  • Relevant: Are the goals of the online strategy relevant from the point of view of the company's long-term goals?
  • Scheduled: By when should the goal be achieved? A time reference causes the goal to become concrete and provides you with an orientation for the action.

Example:

In the long term, you may want to increase website traffic, but this goal is too general and needs to be broken down into smaller steps. A concrete SMART goal could be something like: We want to double the organic traffic of the website by the end of February 2022 compared to 2021.

Once you have defined your goal, you can take appropriate steps, e.g. plan a website redesign, build up communication channels, increase visibility on Google, etc.
